The New Conference Amistad Center Dedication
What a great day we shared in DeWitt on Saturday. The sun was shining. Many of the 100 or so members of the New York Conference were in shirt sleeves. Some even wore shorts.
Conference Minister, Geoffrey Black, greeted us. We sang and prayed, we dedicated the building with a special litany led by Michael Caine, Rick Cowles, David Felton, Carol Giordano and Marian Shearer. Betty Krech sang in her lilting soprano as we prayed, "Bless this House." There were speeches.
John Hottenstein, former chairperson of the UCCNY Executive Council, told of how the idea and identification of the property took shape. It all happened while Geoffrey Black was on one of his walks around the neighborhood.
Clare Price gave thanks for all those who helped him renovate the building. Many hands went into knocking down old walls to make new space, ripping up old carpet, and painting!
Larry Paul shared how inspiring his experience has been in meeting with individuals whom he and his team on the Capital Funds Campaign Steering Committee asked for major gifts. Such generosity and faith!
Present UCCNY Executive Council chairperson, Martha Koenig Stone, lifted up the example of the prophet Jeremiah in reminding us of the hope that we are continually given by God. Facing exile, Jeremiah bought a peace of land in Jerusalem. He knew that God would do a new thing and that he would return the property that he had purchased. Even so, God is doing a new thing in our lives throughout the New York Conference. Indeed.
The ceremony culminated with the cutting of a ribbon. Carol Giordano did the honors. Then we gathered for fellowship and food, basking in the warmth of the day and the joy of the occasion.
